On this auspicious day of Navratri, My mother and I observed Navratri fast. We woke up early in the morning, took a bath, and wore new clothes. We then prepared for the pooja and offered prayers to Goddess Durga. After the pooja, I went to the gym to do my regular workout, and on my way back, I bought coconut burfi, some fruits, and coconut water to offer to God. My mother then cleaned the God's almirah and offered prasad to God. We also lit diyas and decorated the house with flowers to welcome the Goddess
Navratri, the festival of nine nights, is celebrated twice a year with great enthusiasm and fervor in India. It is one of the most auspicious and significant festivals in Hinduism, which is celebrated to honor Goddess Durga and her nine forms. This festival symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and it is believed that during these nine days, the powers of the Goddess are at their peak. The festival is celebrated with immense devotion, and people observe fast, offer prayers, and participate in various cultural activities.
Navratri is celebrated differently in different parts of the country. In North India, people perform Ramlila, a dramatic representation of the life of Lord Rama. In the eastern parts of India, especially West Bengal, Navratri is celebrated as Durga Puja. Huge pandals or temporary structures are set up to worship the Goddess.
In Gujarat, Navratri is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm. The people of Gujarat participate in Garba and Dandiya, which are traditional dances performed in circles. Women wear traditional colorful dresses and men wear kurta-pyjama or dhoti-kurta. The atmosphere is vibrant and full of energy.
On the first day of Navratri, which is also known as Ghatasthapana, people install a clay pot or kalash symbolizing the presence of the divine. It is filled with holy water, and a coconut is placed on top. This pot is kept in the puja room and worshipped every day for the next nine days.
The first day of Navratri marks the beginning of the festival, and it is considered as the most auspicious day. The preparations for the festival start a few days before the actual day, where people clean their houses, decorate their homes with flowers, and prepare for the pooja. On the day of Navratri, people wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear new clothes. They then offer prayers to the Goddess and seek her blessings for prosperity, happiness, and success.
On the eighth day or Ashtami, a special worship called Kanya Pujan is performed. Nine young girls representing the nine forms of the Goddess are worshipped and offered food and gifts. It is believed that by doing so, one is blessed with happiness and prosperity.
On the ninth day or Navami, a special havan or fire ritual is performed to seek blessings from the divine
The most important aspect of Navratri is the fasting, which is observed by many people. Fasting is believed to purify the mind, body, and soul and help in attaining spiritual strength. During the fasting period, people refrain from consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, and cigarettes. Some people also avoid eating grains and opt for a fruit and milk diet. The fast is broken in the evening with special dishes prepared for the occasion.
Navratri is not just about fasting and offering prayers; it is also a time for cultural festivities. People participate in traditional dance forms like Garba and Dandiya, which are an integral part of the festival. These dances are performed in groups, and people dance to the beats of the dhol and other musical instruments. The dance forms symbolize the celebration of life, and people enjoy the vibrant colors, music, and energy of the festival.
Navratri is a festival of joy, happiness, and devotion. It is a time when people come together to celebrate the victory of good over evil and seek blessings from Goddess Durga. The festival teaches us to be disciplined, dedicated, and to have faith in the higher power. It is a time to connect with our roots, our traditions, and our culture. As we celebrate Navratri, let us pray for peace, prosperity, and happiness for all. May the blessings of the Goddess be with us always!
