Hutsuls considered the vargan to be a female instrument. Vargan in the hands of the hostess was the main musical instrument at parties in the Carpathian villages. The Hutsuls had another interesting custom: the boys gave the girls they had feelings for a vargan.
There were even whole ensembles of varganers who played on holidays. In the Transcarpathian folk choir there was a well-known ensemble of varganers with 45 participants. In the Hutsul region they still play the instrument.
