I almost forgot this contest if not for who tagged me in her post. I have saved this contest since it was first published which I decided to participate soon but I never know I would forget.
Seriously, I haven't been much active online due to my exams, but thank God I will be ending tomorrow while I take my rest and resume fully to my blogging.
There are many stereotypes but I will only be mentioning one of them that is so popular among Nigerians here. First of all, what is stereotype?
According to Wikipedia
Stereotype is an over generalized belief about a particular category of people.
I wouldn't be talking about people here but stereotyping food in our culture. We all know this food called "Garri and Groundnut".
I don't think any Nigerian here wouldn't know this simple and quick meal in our country.
I was brought up with this special food. This is what we always drink when I and my siblings return from school in the afternoon and till now, I still drink Garri with Groundnut.
The stereotype about it is that those who drink Garri are poor and that poverty refused to leave such person.
Is this true? I will definitely say NO because Garri isn't made only for the poor and in fact it is a food one is proud of drinking depending on what you used to drink it.
Just look at this combination 👇
Who would tell me this kind of "return back from heaven food"😂 is for the poor? Many times, I feel good and satisfied whenever I take this meal.
When you tell someone you took Garri and Groundnut, they will say "you just returned from Ijebu". Ijebu is a town in the western part of Nigeria and because we all believed those who lives in Ijebu likes Garri and it is their favorite, then they would term it as going to Ijebu whereas you are in your home, sitting alone and enjoying this sweet and delicious meal especially complementing it with Chilled water.
I see Garri to be everyone's favorite whether poor or rich. Food is food and I can't be in support of those who stereotype it to be poor man's food.
At times, I drink my Garri with fried fish. Now tell me, am I poor to have taken Garri? 😅
Many would even drink Garri with fried chicken or turkey. Are they also poor?
In conclusion, we shouldn't stereotype something we aren't sure of. It's just how people decided to handle it including our culture which is our way of life.
