So if you don’t know, I started this Cross Culture community and one of the reasons is that I want to understand people more deeply and help them understand each other more deeply.
It’s so easy for people to get stuck seeing the world one way and not considering how others may see it, and so communication becomes so hard. I feel that in the age of the internet this should be a thing of the past but people are still stubborn and afraid to get outside of their comfort zone.
More than that though, I think sometimes we just don’t know how to ask, and we don’t really understand how interesting our lives and way of thinking may be to others so we don’t always think to share.
Back when I was in high school in the US I remember thinking my Indian friends holidays were interesting but when I asked him about them, he just said “it’s just Indian shit, don’t worry about it”. He literally could not see why it was interesting for me because it was so normal to him. And also he never had anyone take interest
More than holidays and dress and music and facts you can find with a Google search, I’m interested in hearing about how people think, how they relate to each other, how they feel about controversial topics and other cultures, what kind of people they want to come and what kind of lives they want to live.
Ideally is like to change how people see culture. It’s something that we interact with and contribute to, not just something that we are born into. And I think many of the worlds problems will be solved when we start building new cultures that break through any old boundaries set by the things that separate us.
We can start right here.
Anyway...
I sometimes forget just how much people are interested in Japan and I’ve lived here 8 of the last 13 years. I am not Japanese but I’ve spent a whole lot of time trying to understand it, exploring its biggest city and being influenced by the way of life here.
(taken on my stroll through Nakano Broadway, a shopping mall that's considered an alternative to Akihabara, probably the second biggest Otaku center in Tokyo, but more focused on retro figures, use games, and niche stuff...the feeling of the shopping mall, especially the interior, is actually more HK than Japan. Lots of very old shops there. It's rare to find a shopping mall in Tokyo that has that retro vibe.)
I don’t personally represent Japan but as an outsider I can see some things that even locals can’t see. There are some things that a native could answer better but I’ve spent most of my adult life here so I don’t see how I’m not qualified to speak about it.
I want to give all my friends here an opportunity to ask whatever they are curious about and I’ll try to satisfy your curiosity to the best of my ability. I expect to be busy in the comments section.
Ask me anything about Japan 😉
