I arrived at the local library, around 9:45 am. By that time, I had already spent an hour or so outdoors ( or outside my house ), drinking 2 coffees at my favorite bakery in the center of my town and eating some nice bread with cheese.
I enjoyed my second coffee and munched my bread, sitting at a table on the terrace in front of the bakery, which also serves as the main square of my town.
It's basically filled with tables and chairs, with old people and sometimes young(er) people.
There is a fountain to be foun(taine)d and also a bunch of beautiful sycamore trees.
I was the only person sitting there, as Autumn has finally started ( after a warm and sunny first half of October ) and the only human being brave enough to ignore the wind and light drizzle - perhaps the only Dutch(hu)man around, this morning.
and believe me there's plenty of Dutchies in Portugal/ my area these days . I seem to attract them, like flies
The parasols were closed, some of them had been blown over, as had the trashbins. All in all, a perfect setting for a morning coffee and a nice photo to 'beautify' my post with.
Aren't you getting tired of all these pretty pictures? I sure am.
You're welcome!
To get back to the title of this post:
Did you know flies like to read?
I didn't.
But I just asked the librarian,
after cracking a joke first:
Vendes mata-moscas?
( do you sell fly swatters? )
after which she replied with a laugh
and:
Não, uso um jornal
( No, I use a newspaper )
raising her right hand holding a rolled up newspaper in it.
I could have added another joke, like:
that is the best thing to do with a newspaper. Don't read it, just swat flies!
but I didn't.
Instead I cracked a joke that I had wanted to make before I walked over to her:
( Parece que ) as moscas gostam de ler...
(( It looks like ) flies like to read)
where I was not referring to the newspaper but the amount of flies in the library.
She laughed again, I smiled back at her and walked back to my laptop/ seat.
By now, there are about 10 flies around me and a bunch of them keep touching my bare hands and arms.
Perhaps it's time to start wearing a sweater and gloves ( instead of a T-Shirt ), it's Autumn after all ;<)
I just walked over to the librarian, once more.
and not because I fancy her
This time I was holding a newspaper, that I had grabbed from a newspaper/ magazine rack.
I said:
Posso usar um jornal também, para matar ( as ) moscas?
( can I also use a newspaper to kill flies with? )
She replied with:
eu dou-lhe um velho
( I will give you an old one )
this might be the beginning of a beautiful friendship...
Keep swatting them flies! ( and if you still have doubts, make sure to check out my previous 2 fly posts: Like Swatting Flies and Time Flies or try calling the Ghostbusters, they also deal with flies nowadays.
