The carabao, (Bubalus bubalis) is a swamp type buffalo which is given the English common name as water buffalo. This animal is believe to be originated from the Philippines and as proof, their oldest remains ever recorded are recovered from the upper layers of the Neolithic Nagsabaran site, which part of the Lal-lo and Gattaran Shell Middens of Northern Luzon which dates back from 2200 BCE to 400 CE.
During the seventeenth century carabaos were introduced to Guam from the Philippines that is under the Spanish colonial government at that time and they became an animal with great cultural significance to the Chamorro people.
The carabao is the national animal of the Philippines, hence, in the late 1980s, the carabao puppet character Kardong Kalabaw became popular as a symbol of the Philippine people's hard work, resilience and sense of industry
