A few months ago, my nephew turned seven years old and I bought him a cool set of Vortex binoculars; I wanted to get him a watch but couldn't find the right one in time for his birthday. He loves mine, a Casio G-Shock Mudmaster, pictured above to the right but it's a big watch for a seven year old so I had to find something that sort of looked like it but was smaller - it's also too expensive for a seven year old to have.
He said to me once, "hey big bonkers, I'd love a watch like yours one day." Well, little bonkers, you'll soon have one.
I ended up finding him a Casio 5565, above left, which I think will be perfect for the little guy and I'm looking forward to giving him the gift. It has world time, a stop watch, count down timer, a light (he'll use this the most, knowing him as I do), time in analogue and digital and is water resistant to 100m, perfect as he sails and is in the water a lot due to living in a tropical part of Australia.
I'll be seeing my nephew in Melbourne at the end of November, he's flying in with his parents from Far North Queensland and I'm flying in from my city for a thing he's competing in - I'm a very proud uncle because he's qualified to compete against the best in the country. Melbourne is only a one hour flight from me so it seemed like a good chance to see the lad considering he lives several thousand kilometres from me and to support him in his competition.
Today I set the watch for his time zone (different from my own) and also set my time zone on the world time feature so he'll always know what time it is where I am, something I think he will feel is cool. I'll be giving it to him pretty much as soon as I get there (we're all staying in an AirBnb) so I'll have time to show him how to use it and I'm really excited for him to have it.
I got my first watch when I was eight, a little Citizen watch and I loved the thing. I ended up destroying it in a terrible bicycle crash I had (one of those fucken dumb bicycle stunts I was known for) and was devastated. I'm not sure what will happen to the watch I give but I know he's going to love it...and that the light will get a workout!
