From my experiences the Finns are embarrassed to speak English to someone who speaks English well which is a fair call; I think, like most people, they don't want to be seen as terrible at it. A few speak English there, they teach it in school as I'm other countries, but they don't use it so tend to lose what they learn.
I speak and write to a lot and, I have to say, her English is really good. She uses slang, sayings and phrases (almost) like someone who has spoken English for life. In return, my Finnish is almost nonexistent.
