Good day, Hivers! It's me and today I am back with another blog to share! Today's blog will be the first part of my internship journey series. I will share to you how my first day as a student teacher went, so sit back, grab a snack, and stay with me as we delve into this experience together!
It was a sunny Monday morning when I arrived at Almacen-Torrevillas National High School, the school where I was deployed along with my other classmates and schoolmates from the other section. If my memory serves me right, there were 13 of us from 4A and 12 from 4B. I was a bit early that day since I was feeling a little excited and nervous altogether. When I arrived in front of the school, there were already a few of my co-interns there and we were waiting for the gates of the school to open.
While waiting, the leader of our batch checked our attendance since this was an important part of our internship. He also checked if our hairs were neatly done and if our uniforms were complete. Aside from the attendance, our visuals were very important too. We wanted to make a good first impression to the principal of the school. Soon, we were already complete before 7 am.
By around 7:10 am, the gates had opened and we were ushered by a teacher to come inside the campus. She guided us to the principal's office since we would be having an orientation there. We waited for a few minutes since the principal of the school was a very busy person and all of us understood the situation. Being a school principal is a not a easy job because there are a lot of tasks to do aside from managing and supervising a school.
When 7:30 am came, the school began its flag ceremony and all of us participated. I couldn't help but chuckle when the students looked at our direction, all confused and looking lost. They might be thinking who we were and what were we doing in their school dressed up in our internship uniforms. When the flag ceremony ended, we all went back in front of the principal's office to wait.
It did not take long for the glass doors of the principal's office to open and then all of us slowly entered inside with our things, our nervous and excited selves, and our hopes and dreams of learning and training as a future educator. We took our seats inside and waited for the school principal with the other teachers to settle on her table since she had just got inside her office that time.
Soon, our orientation began and I had to listen attentively because the principal was also going to assign us our advisories, our subjects to handle, and how many classes we would be teaching. I was beginning to feel more nervous rather than excited because I was really hoping to teach Grade 8 or Grade 7 students. I love the subjects taught in those years and I also love how the students were so obedient and attentive.
The principal began the orientation. She informed us of what we were allowed to do as interns inside the classroom, she told us our limits, do's and don’t's, along with the school rules and regulations. She also oriented us that we should always wear our prescribed uniform and follow the rules strictly. After that, the principal began to plot our subjects and some of us were given advisory classes to look over at.
There were also five from us that were assigned to senior high school students and they were also given subjects and teachers as their mentors. The list went on until it was finally my turn. When the principal called my last name, I quickly got out my notebook to list down who was going to be my mentor, my students and the subjects that I were to teach.
I was given three subjects to teach and these were MAPEH, English, and Science. The subjects MAPEH and English were both for Grade 7 and I was only going to teach these to one class. Science, on the other hand, was for Grade 8 and I was going to teach this subject to two sections. It was a bit heavy but I had to bear with it until my internship will be finished because this was part of my training as a future educator.
When all of us had our subjects and mentors, we were then told to go and meet our mentors and students. So I packed my things and we all said our thank yous and goodbyes to the principal who also smiled at us and gave her good luck. We head out of the office and I began to search for my mentors. Since the orientation happened all morning, I decided to look for my mentor after lunch.
So after lunch, it immediately went to the faculty office and luckily, all my mentors were there. They were all gathered in one place and they were nice enough to also provide me of the materials that I could use in teaching the subject. After talking to my mentors, they guided me their classrooms. One by one, I met my students and they were also kind enough to introduce their selves to me after I introduced my self to them.
My mentors told the same thing. I was going to be start teaching on the next day so when I got home later that day, I went straight to my room and began planning my lessons. It was a bit hard since I was so overwhelmed of the subjects that I was handling but I still pushed through and managed to finished three lesson plans. I found myself lacking some time to organize my thoughts and how I would be discussing my lessons.
But then again, as a future teacher, I should always prepare myself. So I thought to myself that I would be teaching my lessons impromptu. I familiarized my lesson plan before going to sleep. That night, I just prayed that I could successfully deliver my lessons without my students feeling confused. That would be all for this blog! I hope you all had fun reading it, so I will see you all on the next one!
