Its pretty rare I am able to harvest on the first year or two when growing perennials. Those kind of plants that come back year after year usually need awhile to grow enough to harvest plant material from them.
Though the vigorous growth of the Mint plant is infamous and it did not let me down. I take this Mint and add it to my water, giving it an herb like minty flavor to it.
Harvesting every day is not possible yet, though in a few years I should have enough to collect some for my water everyday. As of making this video I could only collect them daily for about a week before taking more than its grown.
I had to move one of the mint plants as it was trying to take over some other plants right next to it. Finding this out, I placed them around established plants like my Blueberries and maybe my Cherries when they become established.
Cutting the mint, I put them in jars and then bring them back inside for use in my water. Glad I was able to harvest the first year, and looking forward to having enough to harvest every day. And moving them to spaces where they can just grow free should give me alot of Spearmint to eat and use in my water and other things.
Another benefit of the Mint plant is they keep away Mosquitoes. I took some leaves and rubbed them on my arms where they tend to bite, and for the rest of the time spent outside they did not come near me. I was quite surprised it worked so well.
So I wonder if I grow them on a macro scale, will the smell of the Mint plants keep away the blood suckers. I am growing Lavender and Rosemary as well to help with that. As this time of year those bugs are brutal.
I usually wear long pants when its warm outside as those Mosquitoes will just go after my legs. But hoping with these Spearmint plants, Lavender and Rosemary that will reduce their presence greatly.
Curious to see how well these Mint plants grow in the shade. I placed a few of them under some trees and wondering if they will grow. I moved them a few weeks ago so it will be some time before I know if they establish or not. Maybe by next year ill have a better idea.
