Do you remember Bob Barker from the Price is Right? Well even if you don't he was very famous even before he was in Happy Gilmore and at the end of each and every broadcast for 35 years he said “Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutered.”
The cynic in me thought, many years later as an adult that Bob Barker must have been paid to say this but as it turns out he is a very dedicated animal-welfare activist and actually founded the DJ&T foundation in 1995 that fund low cost spay/neuter clinics all across the United States. This guy is no phony and he was never paid to say those famous words at the end of what is likely the most popular and longest running game show of all time.
I talk about this again because I am a member of multiple online animal-welfare groups and lately several of the players in the game have been "attacked" by a group of people who claim to be animal-activists that believe that sterilizing animals is a bad thing. Among their spurious claims is that we are "forever altering the animal's behavior and treating them like our subjects rather than the living creatures that they are."
This really boils my blood because these people live in dreamland if they think that the alternative is better than what animal sterilization accomplishes.
The above meme is only for the USA, in other countries such as the one that I live in they don't even have any sort of sponsored "shelters" such as the one we operate and the capacity is nowhere near millions. Most of the animals live a life of constant stress, starvation, sickness and disease and their lifespan is dramatically short. The idea that there would be a group of people out there that are advocating AGAINST stray animal sterilization is just ludicrous to me and I think most anyone else who actually knows anything about animals.
There are other benefits to sterilization for pets as well, particularly females as various types of cancer in dogs originate in the reproductive organs. I don't know if you have ever had the misfortune of witnessing an animal (or worse, a person) who is slowly dying from cancer but it is not a pretty sight.
Also, going into "heat" is a pretty stressful time for an animal and the elimination of this makes for a much happier animal in an overall sense. Plus, if you want to view this on a purely financial level, getting your animal sterilized is much less expensive than a birth will cost you, particularly once you factor in the cost of having 2 to 8 additional animals running around your house. Plus getting your pet sterilized is a good way to have Bob Barker show you mercy should you ever get into a fight with him.
I suppose that there is going to be a group of crazies out there no matter how insane their cause is. I just found it particularly alarming that such an organization exists at all. There don't seem to be many of them, but the fact that there are any of them is surprising to me.
