On this morning we woke up before the sun to get an early start on a long hike to Iceberg Lake in Glacier NP. As we were driving, half asleep, in early blue hour low light I spotted a dark shadow just off the road out of the corner of my eye and my first thought was, bear! and so I slammed on the breaks, yelled "BEAR!" and rolled down the windows to get a better view. We had to back the car up a bit to make sure but we could see the bear rustling around the berry bushes having an early morning snack.
can you see the bear?
We promptly grabbed our cameras and took some photos of him from the safety of the car, either inside or from behind it. The bear headed deep in to the bushes to find the good berries.
Eventually he came out again and found better berry bushes to snack on, it was awesome to see him gently grab the branches with his massive claws that could rip your face off and clean off a branch of berries.
Meanwhile we were kinda missing a killer sunrise, like one that you only dream about, I was out and away from the car a bit so I didn't want to run back to the car for my wider lens. The whole sky was filled with these bright orange and purple clouds
Back to the bear, he started to feel bad that we missed the awesome sunrise so he proceeded to walk out into the open field to sniff around, and let us get some nice shots of him without having to shoot through bushes.
Jessi, Derek, and Brandon, probably all shooting with vastly different lenses. I wonder if we could convince to post one of his bear photos from this morning
A scene straight out of a movie, bear, cowboy, mountains, sunrise.
Since I didn't have access to my wider lens I thought I try my hand at a pano to capture whole scene, the bear turned it's head during the photos but it stayed in the same place, turned out pretty good.
After spending a little more than an hour we decided we should get going on our hike to Iceberg Lake, where we ended up seeing another bear and cub along the trail, and of course took a cold dip in the lake, but that's for another post.
This was our last full day of our trip in Glacier and was hands down the best day of the whole trip, which is saying a lot because each day we had awesome conditions and saw and went to amazing places.
