Hi Brethren,
I'm contributing to the biblical question titled "What is the baptism in the bible? (Part 2 of 3)"
It is not only river Jordan that John the Baptist baptized. "John 3:23 And also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water: and they came, and were baptized"
So, John the Baptist know what he was doing when he baptized our LORD Jesus Christ in the river Jordan with some others.
That is not even the right place for baptism. It is not only the river Jordan that people can be baptized. May be for the sake of the convenience of some people who are far away from the river Jordan.
Although it can just be a walking distance from Aenon to river Jordan and decided to be baptized.
It isn't good to say that you have to go to the river Jordan to be baptized.
It is no logical and biblical. It is not visible. In life there are things which are visible; Visible which means in law something that can be accomplished comfortably. Something attainable.
How can an African even a poor African that does not even have something to eat paying the fare from Africa to Jordan river or Israel to be baptized.
It is impossible. So, considering the value or importance of baptism. It is a necessary step to SALVATION.
"1Peter 3:20-21 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the day of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by the water. Verse 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:"
So, God used flood or water to wipe off corruption from the earth.
But the family of Noah were saved by the water from the corruption of the earth. So, baptism really is a step to salvation.
Now, if you are going to conclude or believe that for you to be saved is for you to be baptized in the river Jordan that is impossible even for the poor also.
Regardless of where you are being baptized, what matters most is your SALVATION.
According to Mark 10:39 Jesus says ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of: and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized.
So, Jesus was not talking of the place of baptism because it was not only in the river Jordan or river Aenon that the baptism was taking place.
According to Acts 8:36 and as they went on their way, they came into a certain water: and the eunuch said, see, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
This is Evangelist Philip and the Eunuch on their way to Ethiopia, they went to Jerusalem to worship.
Acts 8:27- returning home. And alongside of the way Eunuch saw water and asked Philip for baptism. Of course, that is not river Jordan. So, baptism can be done any body of water (clean water).
Now, the baptism Jesus Christ was talking about is living an exemplary life of Jesus Christ Himself.
A kind of good life that portrays us as children of God and that magnetizes people into
His KINGDOM drinking from the same cup of a genuine REPENTANCE and SALVATION.
