Several occasions have I put this very question, very simple, very profound, to myself: how many times am I to study the word of God? Is it once a week? Only on Sundays? Or only when I feel like it? The answer does not merely lie in the number of times I started to understand as I started becoming more religious, but a matter of ensuring that the word of God is a part and parcel of my everyday life.
The bible explains this point clearly that the word of God must remain in us at all times. Joshua 1:8, writes, This book of the law shall not forsake thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein, day and night. It does not imply that we are not to study it once in a while.
We are to consider it, read it and live with it in our day-to-day. This verse had been an eye opener to me. This is a lesson that I learned to study the word of God not just as an infrequent task but as something that should be done on a daily basis.
Besides, Psalm 119: 105 in the Bible states: Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my way. A lamp is never used and disposed of. we require it every time and time again, particularly in darkness.
Similarly, I require the word of God on a daily basis to make my decisions, think about it, and act. In its absence, I am easily prone to mistakes.
The word is important as demonstrated by Jesus Himself. In Matthew 4: 4, He said, Man shall not live by bread only, but by every word which shall come out of the mouth of God.
In the same way that I feed myself on a daily basis to make a living, similarly I have to feed my spirit daily through the word of God. Unless I continue feeding on it, my spiritual life will be weak.
I have occasions when I am exhausted or pressed in time and I do not want to study the Bible. But I have come to realise that it is the times I need it the most.
It is the word of God that corrects me and that teaches me and comforts me. According to the passage in 2 Timothy 3:16, all the scripture is inspired by God and is profitable to doctrines, reproof, correction, instruction in righteousness.
Therefore, in how many times do we study the word of God? The truthful reply is:daily, and as numerous times as possible. It must not weigh it down, but be something of a life-line.
Individually, I have observed how it calms even my heart and guides my life. The deeper I learn it the more I know God and the nearer I am to him.
