One of the most beautiful ways that I relate with God is through prayer. It is silent, intimate and sincere. Each time I pray I may think that I am speaking to someone who really listens and hears me.
The Bible is urging us to always pray. In 1 Thessalonians 5: 17, it reads; pray without ceasing. This reveals the need of prayer in life of a believer. However, there are occasions when I also ask myself, does most of my praying suffice?
I have realized that when it comes to prayer, it is not only words but God expects more. According to the Bible in James 2: 17, it suggests that faith alone on its own unless combined with works is considered dead.
This implies that my actions should be accompanied by prayers. I should also be ready to do what is right in case I pray to be helped. When I pray on behalf of others then I must also treat them with love and kindness. Prayer should move me to act.
This was demonstrated by Jesus himself. He used to pray frequently, however, He also ran out to teach, to heal, and to help people. Jesus stated in Matthew 7: 21, that not all who say to Him, Lord, Lord, shall come into the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.
This makes me remember that it is not just that God is listening to me, but also looking over my shoulder.
There are moments that I can pray and feel good easily but find it difficult to obey. Yet, true faith requires both. In Philippians 4:6, it is said, Be ye aware of naught, But in all things through supplication and request As ye mayst knowe always to God and I know this in all my heart. However, it is also true that once I pray I have to put trust in God and act according to his guidance.
So, is praying alone enough? I would get to say no. The prayer is the start and not the finish. It opens my heart to God and my love to Him is expressed in my actions.
I become a stronger person in faith when I pray and also obey. Not only do I become a listener, but I am going to be a doer of the word of God.
Eventually, action and praying should be hand in hand. It is the way I will be able to walk with God and lead a life that He will find satisfactory.
