One of the best gifts that God has bestowed upon all humankind is health. But so many of us are so careless with our bodies, as though we were the sole owners. The Bible clarifies that our bodies belong not only to us to do whatever we want to them.
In 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20, the scripture says, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you and who you have received by God? You are not yours; you were purchased at a price. O, therefore honor God with your body. This verse alone altered my personal thoughts on health. It is not physical issue only, but it is a spiritual duty.
Being healthy Biblically implies that God is very concerned with the conditions of our bodies. He made us on purpose and design. The Apostle John in the book of 3 John 1:2 writes, "Beloved, I hope you will prosper in everything and be healthy, even as your soul thrives.
This gives us an indication that God wants us to be whole; not in spirit alone, not in soul alone, but in spirit, body, and soul. When I first read this, it moved me so much since it implies that God does pray to us to be healthy. but the more ought we ourselves to take it seriously?
Rest is one of the areas that a lot of people ignore. Even the creator, God, took a rest on the seventh day of creation, which is stated in Genesis 2: 2. It was not God becoming weary of this, but a lesson He taught us.
I have known individuals including myself, extend the body to its boundaries in the name of hustle and ambition. but a weak body can do God no good. Rest is not laziness. Rest is obedience.
What we eat and what we take are also important. In Daniel 1:8, he says that Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile himself with the king food.
He preferred to be disciplined and not to be convenient, and was rewarded by God with health and wisdom much above the kind. This teaches me as an individual to be more conscious of my eating and drinking habits.
Lastly, being biblically healthy is also to be mindful. Proverbs 17: 22 states, "A happy heart is good, as medicine is good." Unless explicitly mentioned, stress, bitterness and anxiety are silent killers.
Shedding our burdens on God the way 1 Peter 5:7 teaches us to do is not just an emotional release, but it is a physical healing.
We should aim at glorifying God in our bodies in all things. That is what biblical health means.
