You don’t necessarily need to read the Bible to understand drug addiction—basic medical knowledge can already give you insight. When you learn how the human body functions, you’ll see that addiction can happen to anyone. It’s not limited to a particular person; once you start, the body can gradually adjust.
The human body is naturally built to adapt. People are able to survive in extremely cold places covered with snow, just as others live comfortably in very hot regions like parts of Africa. This shows how flexible the body is. For example, when the weather is cold, the skin tightens, and when it’s hot, the pores open to release sweat, helping the body stay cool.
This same ability to adapt is what contributes to addiction. The first time someone smokes, they may cough because the body recognizes the smoke as harmful. Substances like nicotine, tar, and other toxic chemicals are not meant to be in the body. However, with continued use, the body begins to adjust and accept them. Over time, this can lead to addiction and cause serious harm to the body’s cells and tissues.
At first, the body resists harmful substances, but repeated exposure weakens that resistance. When I came to understand this, along with the message of the Bible, I decided to quit smoking. I threw away my lighter and the last cigarette I had. Since then, I have stopped smoking, guided by my faith and my reverence for God.
God is willing to help you, but you must also be willing to help yourself. Overcoming addiction requires determination and personal effort. Even though God wants to help everyone, nothing will change unless you take the first step.
