Praying the novena, which is a repeated set of prayers over several days, is practiced by many Christians as a way of seeking God’s help or honoring a request. The Bible does not directly mention the word “novena,” but it does speak clearly about how believers should pray. God looks more at the heart and sincerity of prayer than the method or structure used.
The Bible also encourages persistence in prayer. Jesus gave the parable of the persistent widow in
Luke 18:1 to teach that people “ought always to pray, and not to faint.”
This means that coming to God again and again with faith is not wrong. If a novena is prayed with sincere faith, humility, and trust in God, it can reflect this kind of persistence.
The novena itself is not specifically commanded in the Bible, and it can become unhelpful if done as empty repetition. But if it is practiced with true faith, directed to God through Jesus, and done with a sincere heart, it can be a way of expressing persistent prayer. Ultimately, God values genuine communication with Him more than any religious form or tradition.
