Greetings everyone, and welcome to my blog. It is another wonderful opportunity to listen to the word of God through His servant, Bro. Eli Soriano.
Let us take a closer look at the topic of marriage among close relatives—those related by first, second, or even third degrees of blood connection. This subject has both cultural and scientific dimensions that are worth understanding.
Research has shown that marriages between first cousins can significantly increase the risk of birth defects. Some studies suggest that the likelihood may be about twice as high compared to unrelated couples. For example, a study involving over 13,000 babies born in Bradford found that cultural traditions within certain communities played a strong role in maintaining cousin marriages, despite the associated health risks. The research aimed to understand why there were higher-than-expected rates of infant deaths and congenital abnormalities in these populations.
From a biblical perspective, there are also clear instructions regarding relationships among close relatives. In Leviticus 18:6, it is written that no one should engage in intimate relations with close family members. Further verses explain this in detail, specifically prohibiting relations with one’s mother, stepmother, sister, granddaughter, and other close relatives. These guidelines emphasize maintaining moral and family boundaries.
Combining both scientific findings and religious teachings, it becomes evident that relationships within close kin are discouraged. Science highlights the potential physical and genetic risks, while scripture emphasizes moral and spiritual boundaries.
In light of this, it is often advised to seek relationships outside one’s immediate family line. Doing so not only aligns with many religious teachings but also helps reduce the chances of health complications in future generations. Making wise and informed decisions in this area is important for both personal well-being and the health of future children.
