Recently, I had the opportunity to watch a video on the "the old path" YouTube channel, titled "what is religion?". After watching the video, I had a new thought about the spiritual and biblical importance of religion beyond the general definition. Today, I am writing this review about what I understood from this video and why it is important. At the beginning of the video, the original origin of the word 'religion' is discussed.
The Greek word 'threskia' is used in the Bible, which means worship of God or a deity and performing religious rituals. However, what attracted me the most in the video is that religion is not just the name of some rituals, but it is a reflection of your behavior.
An excellent point is mentioned here, quoting James 1:26. If anyone thinks he is religious but does not control his tongue or speech, his religion is futile [01:13]. That is, if you spread hatred or speak ill of people, your worship will be of no use. This topic seems very relevant to my current social behavior.
A large part of the video discusses what true worship is and where it should be. According to First Timothy 3:15, the 'Church of God' or the house of God is the pillar of truth. Here people are taught how to speak, how to treat others and how to live. Quoting John 4:23-24 of the Holy Bible, it is said that God should not be worshipped in name only, but should be worshipped 'in spirit and in truth'.
Finally, the video highlights the difference between the Creator and the creation. Many times people leave the Creator and worship any creature or object, which is a wrong path according to Romans 1:25 of the Bible. True religion is to worship only the Creator, not any created thing.
In short, the video has taught me anew that religion is not a mechanical practice. It is essentially a beautiful combination of devotion to God and right behavior towards people. If you want to understand the true biblical meaning of religion, this short but informative video will give you food for thought.
