Many people hear God’s word with their ears but never truly receive it in their hearts, and this is a concern the Bible speaks about with deep seriousness. Hearing alone is easy; it can happen in church, during family prayers, or through reading Scripture. Yet listening requires humility, reflection, and a willingness to change. God’s word often challenges our comfort, exposes our habits, and calls us to obedience, which is why some people choose to ignore its meaning even after hearing it. Jesus warned about this when He said,
Matthew 15:8 “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me”
When the heart is closed, the word remains only sound, not guidance.
The Bible makes it clear that failing to listen to God’s word has spiritual consequences. When people hear but refuse to obey, their lives remain unchanged, and they continue in the same struggles, sins, and confusion. God desires more than attention; He seeks obedience and faithfulness expressed through action. True listening means allowing God’s word to correct, direct, and shape our lives, even when it is uncomfortable. Without this response, hearing becomes empty, and the purpose of God’s message is lost.
