The Bible says: "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction and to keep himself unspotted from the world" (James 1: 27, Isaiah 58: 10-12).
Caring for people is not a suggestion, it is a biblical command. It is a character trait every one that calls him or herself a believer should possess. We shouldn't live our lives on a daily basis ignorant of this.
If we claim to be truly Christians one of the things that we should be found doing is doing good to people. Not just our family but also to our brethren in the household of faith. They also should be regarded and treated as family.
Even down to our neighbours, strangers, even our enemies. When mandated us to do good to men he did not specify it to only a certain category. It was general. We were should live our lives in obedience to this command.
