After Jesus Christ's resurrection, He remained on earth for forty days to strengthen the faith of His disciples.
These were the very people He had commissioned to take the gospel to the ends of the earth and He wanted them firmly grounded to withstand the challenges and persecution they would face as they advanced the kingdom of
God.
It was only after this forty-day 'crash program' did Jesus' return to the Father. Ten days later, on the fiftieth day after His resurrection, He sent the Holy Spirit. Bible scholars believe this marked the birthday of the Church.
The Holy Spirit was the fuel the disciples needed, to run their race without fainting.
As God's children, no matter how much knowledge we have about God, if our lives lack the power of the Holy Spirit, that knowledge will take us nowhere. It is only through the Holy Spirit that we can do exploits.
Christ sent the Holy Spirit, just as He promised, to empower the Church for effectiveness in life and ministry. One of the primary reasons the Holy Spirit was given, is to empower us to live victoriously. We are first empowered to rise above sin and to practice righteousness.
