We sometimes think life is defined by moments when everything seems to go our way but in reality, that is not life in its truest sense. It is often in the midst of crisis that we come face to face with the true meaning of existence.
Perhaps this is why Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 7:1-4 [TLB] that the day one dies is better than the day he is born! It is better to spend your time at funerals than at festivals. For you are going to die, and it is a good thing to think about it while there is still time. Yes, a wise man thinks much of death, while the fool thinks only of having a good time now.'
The truth is, the moment we close our eyes in death, everything we've been striving, fighting, or even compromising our values for becomes meaningless. That is why my heart aches when I see people compromising their conscience, lying, cheating and trampling on others in pursuit of fleeting gains.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with making plans or projections. But as long as those plans are what God permits. God is sovereign and He alone determines the length of our days. Therefore, even if you believe you will live a hundred years, live each day as though it were your last, because none of us knows what tomorrow will bring.
