One of the initial steps to obedience of a believer is baptism. It is not a tradition and church activity only. It is an open statement that one has chosen to follow Jesus Christ. It is written in the Bible that, the one who believes and is baptized shall be saved (Mark 16:16).
This demonstrates that baptism is accompanied with faith. When one is baptized it implies that there is a new life in Christ that started with the new life and the old life has started.
Humility and surrender is another lesson that I believe is taught by baptism. Each time an individual descends into the waters, it symbolizes the burying of the old self and a new life when one gets out of the water.
Bible answers this question in the following way: we were buried with him by the means of baptism into death so that we, too, should walk in the newness of life (Romans 6:4). Baptism is not sorcery but it is an act of heartfelt obedience.
Engagement on the other hand is regarding commitment following baptism. Being involved in the faith implies remaining active, loyal, and serious towards serving God. One cannot just be baptized and resume past lifestyles.
The Bible cautions against it, Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only (James 1:22). Engagement implies fellowship, following the teachings, loving other people and a holy life.
I have been taught that empty baptism may take place as well as baseless engagement may occur. Both must work together.
Jesus told them, If ye love me keep my commandments (John 14:15). This demonstrates that actions are what prove true faith.
To sum up, baptism is the start and action is the process. Through sincerity, obedience, and with the help of God, a believer can be strong in faith and be able to be faithful till the end.
