For us in the states, last week on Thursday was Thanksgiving. Friday was what is known as Black Friday and is dedicated to shopping. I didn't do much shopping, but I did take a break from the #whoareyoulisteningto posts to just enjoy the holiday.
There was a little bit of a theme this week with my music listening and you will understand it a little more as I start sharing the songs. I can tell you right now that all of the artists that I am highlighting this week are female.
My wife and I were once again listening to the Bon Jovi channel on Sirius/XM one morning on our way in to work. As I have mentioned before, not only do they play Bon Jovi songs, but they also play songs that have inspired Bon Jovi or that Jon Bon Jovi personally likes.
I must have been living under a rock, because when this song by Concrete Blonde came on, I couldn't remember having ever heard it before in my life.
I dug the lead singers voice so much that I took a really deep dive into Concrete Blonde. While not all of their stuff sounds like this song, they do have a lot of great music spread across a many more albums than I would have expected.
It would seem they had a bit of an non traditional following that might have been why they didn't break into the mainstream as much as I think they could have.
It shouldn't surprise you too much that listening to Concrete Blonde led me down the road of listening to 4 Non Blondes. They both have the word Blonde in their band title and it occurred to me that the lead singers voices are kind of similar.
I then got thinking about the fact that I have heard this song about a million times in my life, but I have never really listened to any of the other songs on their album.
I have to admit, after listening to the album that this single came from, it is pretty clear why they were kind of a one hit wonder. This was absolutely the best song on the album. I am not saying the rest of the album wasn't good, but this track set the bar pretty high and in my opinion the rest of it fell pretty flat.
I am not unwilling to give it another listen to see if I can pick out something that I missed the first time, but I have a bunch of other music to listen to before I get to that point.
Finally, as happens on occasion I get in a mood where I just need to fall into some Lana Del Rey. Maybe is the cold weather, maybe it is my mental state being on the verge of burnout, but there are sometimes I just love to wrap myself in the sound that Lana creates.
I know there are a lot of people that really don't care for Lana Del Rey. They either don't like her sound or they just don't think she is that great of a singer. I wouldn't necessarily argue with the latter, but she has definitely found a niche and I think she fits in that really really well.
I find her music more soothing than depressing and for me it is somewhat therapeutic. Your mileage may very of course.
So there you have it. That is what I have been listening to this week. Leave me a comment and let me know what you have been listening to. Better yet, write your own post and use the #whoareyoulisteningto tag!
