Guess what... Yep, it is Friday, that means it is time for another edition of #whoareyoulisteningto.
Things have finally started to settle down a bit at work and that has given me the opportunity to explore some different music than I normally listen to.
All of the artist this week are going to be kind of similar and it all started with a little help from Facebook.
I know that is kind of a bad word around here, but I belong to a regional vinyl enthusiasts group on the FB and frequently people post what they are spinning (very similar to what I do here each week).
Well, long story short, someone posted an album by the first artist I am going to highlight and then that led down the rabbit hole to the next artist.
Finally, I am going to leave you with some folk (style) music that Spotify keeps brining me back to from time to time when I hit the end of my current playlist.
Are you ready? Here we go!
I had never heard of Samantha Fish before the guy from the record club posted one of her albums. He was so emphatic about how good it was that I felt obliged to give some of her stuff a listen. Unfortunately, there isn't too much by her on Spotify, but there was enough to pique my interest.
Thankfully there is a lot on YouTube and I have shared a full concert for you here in this clip.
I am a big fan of Grace Potter so given that there is a lot to like about Samantha Fish. They have similar rocking styles but can also get very bluesy at times. The first time I heard Samantha, her voice immediately reminded me of Jann Arden with more of a rock edge.
I was instantly hooked and Samantha will surely be earning a spot in some of my regular playlists.
It must be your lucky day because I am giving you not one, but two full concerts today. I bet you didn't think this post was going to suck up three hours of your time today did you? Good thing it is Friday!
This isn't the first time that Ana Popovic has been on my radar, but I will say that she was re-introduced to me via Samantha Fish. As my Spotify finished the initial songs I was looking for, Popovic eventually came on and I kind of said to myself "oh yeah, she is so awesome".
This is one of the cases where I really feel like the music speaks for itself. I don't have a ton to say, I just encourage you to listen. I am not sure if one of my favorite songs of hers is in this set, so I am going to include it below:
Needless to say, Ana Popovic is now on my vinyl want list. I hope I can find some of her stuff at a reasonable price some day.
Finally, we are going to switch gears a little bit.
Finally, if you ever get the chance, you should check out some of the Tiny Desk Concerts that NPR puts on. They really have some great stuff on there. In fact, there are very few YouTube channels that I subscribe to (I just don't spend as much time there as other people), this is definitely one I do.
Mandolin Orange was introduced to me once again via Spotify. I was listening to some Anderson East or Jason Isbell and after those songs finished it started guessing at what I might like. Without fail, Mandolin Orange "Wildfire" came on. When I saw the title I thought it was going to be a cover of the old Michael Martin Murphy song, but I was very wrong.
If you are a fan of traditional/folk music in the vein of The Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons you should give these two a listen. They are pretty awesome and the harmonies are fantastic.
Anyway, that is all I have for this week. I hope you find something you like. If you have been listening to something awesome this week, let me know about it the comments. Better yet, write your own post and use the #whoareyoulisteningto tag.
