Another Friday means another episode of #whoareyoulisteningto. This week led me down a road that I really wasn't expecting to follow. As is typically the case, it was all prompted by something that my wife and I were listening to on our way in to work.
Right now Sirius/XM has a Bon Jovi channel, so that has been playing quite a bit in the car since Bon Jovi is my wife's favorite band.
I am actually sharing this first song because it is one of those rare instances where I have never heard a song before and then suddenly I hear it twice in the same week. If it were a new song, that might not seem uncommon, but this one was released in 2019.
In addition to playing Bon Jovi songs, the station also plays songs that have been curated from Jon Bon Jovi's personal playlist. This song came on and my wife looked at me like what the hell are we listening to. She may have actually said that, I don't remember...
I saw the title of the song and I had some speculations as to what the subject matter of the song was about. You see, I have the uncanny ability to pick up random pop culture facts and hold onto them. Useless stuff really, but occasionally it pays off.
Because of that, I was aware that "a house painter" is another term for a hitman. I listened to the lyrics a little closer and sure enough, that is what the song is about.
After a bit of research, it turns out this song was written for the Irishman movie that was on Netflix about a year or so ago. We haven't watched it yet, but I have a renewed interest in seeing it now that this song has been brought to my attention.
Sure enough, a couple days later this song gets randomly played on my Spotify account despite not being on any of my playlists. Talk about creepy!
I am not personally familiar with Robbie Robertson, but he has the kind of sound which makes me feel someone like could educate me.
Another day this week we were once again driving in to work and on the easy listening channel that I had one (Sirius/XM The Bridge) a song from one of the James Bond movies came on. I actually think it was "Nobody Does it Better" from "The Spy Who Loved Me".
That got me thinking about what some of my favorite Bond movie songs are.
This one right here is probably one of my favorites. Sheena Easton has a great voice and the song is pretty great.
Of course the risque' Bond opening credit scenes don't hurt the overall feel of the song either.
As much as I love the classic Bond themes, I would be dropping the ball if I didn't admit that Adele totally knocked it out of the park with the theme for "Skyfall". In fact, this quite honestly might be one of the greatest Bond songs ever.
Adele is so talented and the song has that sinister, floaty, secretive feel that is typical for many of the classic Bond films.
Part of me is actually shocked that they are still able to show many of the Bond films on TV. It feels like it would be a ripe target for the recent cancel culture that is happening.
I remember getting into a discussion with a friend quite some time ago about the merits of the Bond films. She did not see the appeal and she felt they objectified women and were quite misogynistic. This was back in the 90's when everyone was quite happy keeping their opinions to themselves. To be honest, she made a lot of good points and I can't really argue with what she was saying.
I still stop on a Bond movie every time there is one on TV though, I just love them.
So there you go. What is your favorite Bond movie song? Have you been listening to anything great this week? Let me know about it in the comments. Better yet, write your own post and use the #whoareyoulisteningto tag!
