One of the very few cacti that still grows in clay pot. I have been repotting them back to plastic pots and right now there is only a couple of them left in clay. This one is doing quite well in it. Maybe because the pot is larger than the other ones.
I like the look of clay, but it just doesn't work for me. The secret is to keep the pot itself in shaded place I think, so it doesn't heat up too much (not that plastic doesn't heat up, but it just works differently) and I lack spaces like that and the ones I have are occupied with other plants. Now I have a pile of small clay pots and no use of them.
Mammillaria Elongata
M. Elongata is native to Mexico and the stems should grow up to 15 cm in height. My one is maybe half the size then. They are super easy to grow and this type is very popular and easy to get in a shop. I have another one with much darker spines (Copper King) that is just staring to bloom. In a few days I will take photos of them both to show the difference.
This cactus grows under my big Crassula Ovata and gets quite a bit of shade. It likes it and looks good even in clay. I will keep it like that until it needs to be moved to a larger pot.
Flowers are not very big and not showy. The ones I have are in this washed out yellow colour, though I have seen pinks ones too. Nothing special, but if there is many of them they do look quite nice. Little bright spots on the plant.
Below you can see some dead stems though. All dried up and empty inside feel almost like paper. At this point they are very easy to remove without damaging the mother plant. The gap will fill up with new stems.
Bonus shot: POS :p
