Seeing the Agave flowers we can feel admiration for this plant, say how nice it is and how tall the stalk with the flowers is. I have at home an Aloe Vera plant which at first sight resembles Agave. It grows a tall stalk with flowers too, every year. But Agave has nothing to do with the ways how Aloe Vera brings its offspring. Agave had a different strategy and destiny... actually, it is a bit sad...
While I can enjoy the flowers of my Aloe Vera every year, that would not be the case with Agave. It can be planted in a pot, yes, but its leaves have sharp thorns. I experienced this morning the sharpness of one thorn... my leg got a kiss from it which resulted in a thin blood thread... Well, it was my fault I went that close to them to take a closer photo. Mainly they grow in nature, on plots and by the paths where we walk. In freedom, they need time and space to grow.
When they are ready to bring the flower, to leave descendants behind, they grow that tall stalk. With buds that later bloom.
From those green little buds, many white flowers pop out. Here I collected from the floor some already dried ones.
I took these photos this morning while we were walking some 5 km from the workshop where I left my car for a check-up. It's been a while since I said that I hear something strange while driving, a frequency that I didn't hear before and I wanted to check with the mechanic if it really is something worrisome. We left the car and we walked these 5 km home, talking and seeing these Agave plants. I stopped every so often to take a photo, but in the end, we got home and shortly after I received a call from the mechanic. Everything is fine with the car, now I have to go back and pick up my vehicle, and pay for the check-up because of the noise that I obviously heard just in my head. I'll see these plants one more time, soon, after I finish writing this post.
So, back to the main topic - why it is a bit sad, the way how they reproduce, as I mentioned at the beginning of the post? After they grow this admirable and spectacular, unbelievably tall flower their life ends. The Agave plant dies. A noble death they face.
It is not that just the stalk dries and dies. The whole plant with its leaves dies after its beautiful blooming is finished. Do you see those dead leaves around the green plant? Those ones already closed their life cycle...
