The world economy has collapsed with the pandemic, most areas of economic development are paralyzed, except for those related to medicine and technology, among a few others. Particularly the tourism industry has had an almost total paralysis of its activities in all latitudes by border closures, limitation of international and even national flights, in short that what we know as globalization has received a hard blow, but it has also been the same with those countries that had a high dependence on the tourism sector.
Such is the case of all Caribbean countries, which have a volume of millions of tourists annually and billions of dollars coming in on behalf of tourism-related activities. A clear example of this is Jamaica, which by the year 2019 (as announced by the Minister of Tourism of Jamaica, Edmond Bartlett) achieved US$ 3.7 billion in foreign exchange, which meant US$ 500 million more than what was registered in 2018.
In this particular, it is very worrying what could happen at an economic level not only in this island that I give as an example but also in the rest of the Caribbean countries, where tourism is the central focus of their economy.
It is in these difficult times that the union between the different nations must prevail, and the most capable must extend a hand to those who need it most. Brotherhood and humanity must prevail.
Such an example has been demonstrated by the Island of Cuba, which has recently sent as support for Jamaica a Health Brigade composed of 49 doctors and 99 nurses, who are already on the Island providing support to all the inhabitants.
This goes hand in hand with what was said by the director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, who assures that only by working together can the pandemic be defeated. I particularly agree with what Etienne said, there is no other way to overcome the situation that affects us all but by integrating and supporting us.
I hope that this will be overcome quickly, and that just as many large transnationals and corporations invest in hotels, shopping malls and more in tourism, (which is not bad, I do not criticize), also understand that without health the world goes into chaos, and that it is good time to give back to countries with a bit of how much they have obtained in benefit.
