Source Reggae Roast at Camden Market
Well, I've surpassed myself: a brand new reggae record just released in the past few days! I tuned into Do It Again half way through last night on Don Letts' Culture Clash Radio Show and really liked it.
It was vaguely familiar and afterwards I found out there's a sample from Long Shot Kick The Bucket by The Pioneers from 1969 running through it - of course it would sound familiar!
I never knew this before about Long Shot:
Relating the sudden and dramatic demise of noted racehorse Long Shot at a race held at Kingston's famed Caymanas Park, 'Long Shot Kick The Bucket' became one of Trojan Records' earliest UK chart hits, with the record peaking at No.21 in the Official UK Singles Chart.
The track was since become a skinhead anthem, its enduring popularity due in part to a cover version by the Specials that featured on the UK ska band's chart-topping live EP entitled Too Much Too Young, which also featured their interpretations of 'Liquidator' and 'Skinhead Moonstomp'.
I've come across Horseman before but Natty Campbell was new to me. It seems he's been touring, MCing his way around the world, a very busy bee, since about 2016.
It's also interesting to see Trojan Reloaded, a new label, sister to the original Trojan Records, so called after Duke Reid's Trojan truck that he used for driving round his sound system, and close partner with Chris Blackwell's Island Records. It seems we in the UK cannot get enough of reggae, with another resurgence happening now, bringing a new wave of young artists.
Anyway, here's a happy sounding song with some real singing on it. Hope it gets you moving your feet and you enjoy it. Let me know what you think in the comments.
