Right outside my room, there is the street where the people put all thier garbage, into between the cars that are parked.
I see a lot of art-making supplies in the trash here, like small rectangular pieces of wood that would be good to paint on, so I tend to keep my eyes peeled.
This morning was cool though, and I actually rummaged through the pile of trash because I saw some vintage books. So i was thinking maybe i could find some collage material in them.
I was really stoked with what I found. Some vintage brazilian science magazines from the 1970's written in Portuguese, complete with totally awesome illustrations and photographs.
I was Very impressed by the cool photographs in these magazines. this makes me want to actually seek out foreign science magazines because they are even cooler than united states ones like Popular mechanics.
And Since I dont even understand what the words are saying, i can incorporate them into my art more abstractly, based purely on the visual information.
Before computers, artists hand drew illustrations for magazines like this.
!
Warning: boobies!
I used to cut up magazines like this for collage but now i want to keep them intact and reference the imagery by drawing or painting them. I want to bring them home and use them as source imagery for figurative work..
Artist Disposes of Abstract Paintings
My second part of this post is about a dumpster dive i found some paintings in.
I saw the artist 2 nights ago working on a painting in this exact location... he was pointing to areas of the work to another person. discussing the work so i was intrigued by him.
2 days later i find myself returning to the exact location to retrieve the motorcycle helmet i forgot with the homie.
The dude was throwing away all his work.
So i rummaged through it and was kinda shocked by the amount of cool work he was just throwing away. it was fucked up. like this was actually decent work.
Maybe the guy is like me, a nomad who cant carry his shit around.
Anyways, the dude was stoked that I was interested and he ran inside and brought me out a small square one.
I gave him $15 for this one.
The Guys name was on the back of the painting.
Until next time yall, Happy Dumpster Diving
