When I was Woofing in Portugal, I met a girl, working on another farm nearby. We liked each other immediately and she told me that she was planning to go to the Canrary Islands next. That sounded pretty interesting and, for I had no other plans, I decided to join her :-)
So we took the bus to Faro, a town more in the South of Portugal, and from there to Sevilla Airport in Spain, to get the plane, which brought us to Tenerife, the biggest one of the Canary Islands.
We only spent a few days there, in a community, which just started to grow their own food and worked on different other interesting projects.
But something called us to La Gomera and luckily a guy, who lived in the community, had a friend there, who let us stay in her house for very little money.
La Gomera left a great impression on me. I can hardly describe it.
Maybe it's the people, who live in remote caves in the barrancos and play Hang Drum in the streets. Maybe it's the flowers, which grow right out of the glistening rocks. Or maybe it's the ancient forest El Cedro, which lives on top of the mountain, spreading its old magical spirit all over the island.
I had incredible strong feelings during the time I stayed there. The atmosphere, the energy of the island is just ... special.
I had the most fascinating encounters and conversations, got very inspired by all the street artists and musicians. I was overwhelmed by the amazing beauty of nature.
But at the same time I had a strange feeling of having to be cautious. There is a lot of magic in the air, magic of any kind. And I had to decide carefully, which offers to take and which to refuse.
After two weeks I was almost relieved that we had to leave, because it was such an intense time. And I needed a bit of space to digest all that I had experienced. I had never felt so weird and happy and tense and awed at the same time!
I hope that makes sense ^^
However, La Gomera is incredibly beautiful and became a really special place for me. It took a lot of my energy, but also gave me a lot of new perceptions in return.
I really want to come back one day, when the time feels right.
