My favorite Holiday-Why is it my favourite?
Everyone at one point in time looks forward to the holidays. It could be Easter, Ramadan, Halloween or Christmas.
It's not all about the holidays that they only anticipate also the gathering of the family under one roof makes it so special and worthwhile.
It's a normal tradition in my family for at least a greater percentage of us to come back with our families to celebrate the new year in my hometown.
This enables us interact with our cousins, know the updates in each of our lives and our next plan.
Its not easy to come back every year tho especially with the different work schedule of our parents and other factors.
I would say, what motivated us most was the fact that my grandparents from my paternal hometown were around.
When they both died a year apart everything changed. We came home still but not with the eagerness we had prior to their deaths
January 2017, my mother's siblings began planning for their parents Golden Jubilee wedding anniversary.
We the grand children had little or no contribution to the event.
We didn't even understand what they were doing until the last trimester of the year when we were taken to the tailor for measurements.
Then came the Christmas holiday. We all travelled a week before Christmas to prepare for the celebration scheduled 31st if December, 2017.
All my mum's siblings with their children came too. Various relations came from their villages to assist in the preparation.
I was so happy to see everyone some of them I know personally, I've seen in pictures and those that knew me when I was still a baby.
We all gathered under one roof to catch up on good old times.
Every morning we'll gather to pray after which the work for the day commences. Water and food was never scarse.
The day finally came, I hurried to church because I had a function to perform.
After the Mass we all retired to the venue for the celebration that is our family compound.
There was loud music every where and that was the peak of my excitement.
Two chefs served that day assorted dishes like fried, jellof and white rice, pepper soup, native soups: Egusi, Oha, Vegetable and Bitterleaf soups.
Side attractions included Salad, spiced chicken and snacks: Chinchin, poff, samosa and spring roll.
It might sound unbelievable but I tasted all of them.
Drinks weren't left out. I can only mention a few but there were others. Fanta, Coke, Sprite, Malt, Pure Heaven, Stout, Star, Heineken... and losts more.
I'm not a lover of drinks so I drank a few soft drinks.
From the start till the end of that day I enjoyed every bit of it.
All thanks goes to my mother's parents for being alive to celebrate their anniversary with them.
I danced my heart out with my family, relatives, friends and well wishers.
I consider that day to be my favorite because of its uniqueness.
It's all about being appreciative for the gift of life first and then for my grandparents to be alive to celebrate their 50 years of marriage not even 50 years of knowing each other.
Definitely they must have known each other for long before getting married.
It's not every day you call people together to celebrate Golden jubilee and when you do so, consider it a thing of joy and a memorable one.
I've had one in my life already up until this point. It's not going to the last as I am also looking forward to more unforgettable holiday experiences with my family.
