I have been visiting some places in my area for years and and thought I knew everything but it has taken the local Gold Coast council putting some information sign boards to teach me a thing or two that I probably should have already know.
Of course the traditional custodians called the "Spit" Dolphin place. Lots of calm water behind the break wall. I am sure if you were here early or late there would be a great chance of seeing some Dolphins swim past. We have seen many down the southern end of the Gold coast at Green Mount and Rainbow Bay but not here yet.
Some snorkelers, I think lots of people learn to scuba dive here too.
I have not done this federation walk, but it is on our to do list. 93 hectares of coastal sand dunes might not be the easiest walk but I am sure it would be great. Come to think of it I think Main Beach parkrun uses a bit of the track at the southern end. So I have done a bit but it is hard to enjoy the scenery when your running as fast as you can.
The Seaway is 250 metres wide, I have seen people paddling there surf boards across the get to the uncrowded waves on South Stradbroke island. I did not know the river mouth was moving 60 metres north per year until the built the break wall in 1984 and it helps boats enter and leave the Gold Coast broad water and Southport.
I have tried surfing at this beach a few times, it probably the best beginner beach closest to my house. The rock wall and sand pumping pier seem to give this little beach some protection.
It was longer than I thought out and back to the end of the break wall.
