Mare Crisium
Description: Mare Crisium, the Sea of Crises, is an isolated circular mare on the Moon's eastern near side, spanning 555 kilometers, one of the oldest maria formed about 3.9 billion years ago. Its dark basaltic plain is surrounded by highlands, with wrinkle ridges and small craters on the surface. Visible as a dark oval from Earth, it was the site of Luna 15 and Luna 24 missions, which returned samples showing high-iron basalts. The mare offers insights into early lunar volcanism and basin filling.
How I Got My Name: "Mare Crisium" is Latin for "Sea of Crises," part of the early naming convention by astronomers linking lunar features to earthly conditions.
Interesting Fact: One of the first maria formed; visible as a dark oval to the naked eye. The Soviet Luna 24 in 1976 returned samples from here, revealing basalts with unique chemistry, aiding in mapping lunar mantle variations.
Location: Centered at 17.0° N, 59.1° E, 555 km diameter.
