As I am back on the island of Mauritius once again, I am exicited to see what's new when it comes to street art. I went to the capital of the island, Port Louis to check that out. The first place is Chinatown. The bus station is close by,making Chinatown the easiest part of town to check out first. Each year I am allways exited to see what's new, but also to see if my favourites murals are still here.
The first street art I saw, is located in a small, narrow alley called Venpin Street. When I was here in 2021 I noticed how this small alley had turned into an art gallery. Most of the paintings have been inspired by the Japanese cartoon art. I have heard locals call Venpin Street, the «Manga alley».
The first time street art appeared in Port Louis was in 2016. After that year murals have popped up all over town. But Chinatown is the place you will find the most. Behind the initiative to paint the streets in Chinatown, was the organization called New Chinatown Foundation. The idea was to make the area more atractive. They have managed that very well.
As I walk through from one end to the other, I see a few new murals. The most amazing is this large painting on the street. I kept looking at it, to try to figure out if it's one character, or if it's concists of several smaller ones. I think I see more than more than one..
I continue through Chinatown I came across this mural with Bruce Lee. It has been here for some years, but the blue dragon is new. The text says «50th death anniversary Bruce Lee».
