Hola Hivers and Street Art Lovers! It's an amazing day here on my side of the world and I am hoping it is the same with you, wherever you are :)
The good husband and I plus an uncle went for a ride on Sunday to Kabayan, one mountainous municipality in the country (Philippines) which is known for mummifying their dead (especially the rich ones, called the 'baknangs' or 'kadangyans') many decades ago (Apo Anno was one of the most revered mummies from the place. He was said to have lived for 250 years and his body was covered in tattoo symbolizing how extraordinary his life had been).
The municipality is also known for its caves (Bangao and Timbac). It is also where one of the highest mountains (Mt. Pulag) in the country is located.
While traversing down a narrow road that was being repaired, I noticed a mural at the left side so I frantically opened my phone camera and photographed it through the windshield. There were men working and rocks were piled up on the right side of the street so there was no way to stop and take photos. I was just glad I was able to take a snap of it while the car was running.
I have no idea of who the artist was but he/she is really good. I believe he/she may have been commissioned by the local government because we noticed there were a lot of arts along their long, winding highway. The artworks were all beautiful but I was only able to snap some of them.
The mural depicted and showcased the locality's culture and tradition. It included mummies (extreme left side). At the far right were women in their traditional costumes dancing a local dance called "Sadong" and a man playing the gong.
In the middle were two adult folks, one wearing a red head bandana, (He might be the chieftain), and an older folk wearing a red g-string holding a wine jar, my guess is that he is a "mambunong" or a tribal priest. The background was beautiful too. The clear blue skies, the fluffy and cottony clouds, and the golden rays in the backdraft kind of give a sunrise scene (But it could be sunset too because I have observed such sights or sceneries in both sunrise and sunset here in the mountains.) The mural were newly-done on a wall of a house by the roadside.
Times have changed and people too, but it is great and astonishing to see the rich culture and tradition practiced many decades ago come alive through the mural.
It is also good to see many artworks, street arts, and murals around the world through this amazing community and I am glad to share a piece of art from my country's streets too.
So thank you for your time and this is my entry to Street Art Contest #72 by
