Since hubby introduced my kiddo nephew to the world of whisky a few years ago, he's been slowly learning and appreciating this new found taste. Recently the two guys caught up for a whisky session, giving hubby an opportunity to sample kiddo's small but growing collection.
Kilchoman
This was a gift from hubby when kiddo moved into his new place last year. Hubby had read good reviews about it but never tried it himself, and figured it would be a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone present for kiddo. This is a 46% ABV non chilled filtered whiskey, matured in bourbon and sherry cask.
Kiddo has been enjoying this until....
Benromach 15 years
Although I don't drink whisky, I think I have a decent nose. Often I can pick out the main notes which is later confirmed by the official website. Like this Benromach. I noticed a distinctive chocolate note, turns out dark chocolate is one of the main notes☺️. Kiddo bought it after he and hubby tried it at a whiskey tasty event end of last year. Both he and hubby liked it.
It became kiddo's second bottle in his collection pushing the Kilchoman to second place until...
Longrow single malt
The other week kiddo bought his third bottle upon hubby's recommendation. As an uncle, sometimes I think he has a bad influence on the youngster 🫣😃. One of hubby's drinking buddy ie my brother in law, has a bottle of Longrow single malt. Hubby has enjoyed this in the past during one of their post dinner whisky sessions with my other brother in law. They haven't had one for a while as both my brother in laws has been restricting their alcohol intake recently due to health issues.
Back to the Longrow. Kiddo was very pleased with this recommendation and it has now become his top favourite. Both hubby and kiddo says it smells beautiful and trumps both the Kilchoman and Benromach, but they couldn't work out the main note. And here's where I think my nose is definitely improving. The guys were definitely right, it smelled beautiful. Vanilla!! I said. The guys smelled it again. I don't know if they were influenced by me or what, but they both immediately agreed with me. And the official website confirmed it as well "creamy vanilla custard"✌️☺️
I took a small sip as I always do, it was smooth and fragrant but not sickly sweet. So far the best sip I have ever tried and would not resist to try again.
Springbank 10 years
The Longrow is from Springbank distillery, one of hubby's favourite. When kiddo was whisky shopping the other week, he saw the shop had Springbank 10 years in stock and called hubby. Springbank sell out most of the time and hubby has long finished his bottle from two years ago. Time to replenish his stock and he got kiddo to get a bottle for him. I won't review the Springbank 10 years here. If this is the first time you've come across this or are interested to find out more, check out my earlier post from two years ago.
Other whisky overviews
As a non whiskey drinker, I've posted about quite a few whiskys here. I wouldn't call them reviews as I can't comment much on them. They're more overview and stories about how we, or rather hubby purchased them.
