Today I will be reviewing the N64 ROM Hack Peaches Fury.
For some reason, a lot of the SM64 ROM hacks have weird, meta type text and storylines. It's a strange tradition to have silly plotlines and bazaar text boxes. Luckily, this one chat you have with Peach is the only real plot/character interaction. You owe an angry faced Peach 25 stars.
The castle in this game has false doors. The stars are all outside the castle. There is a sign outside the door. The sign has information on the ROM Hack. Personally, I am a fan of programmers leaving information in their ROM hacks like what tools they used, technical details etc. I have learned a lot from the intro screen of ROM Hacks. Maybe this isn't the most fun or beautiful ROM hack, but maybe it has very important use cases etc. Details are helpful.
There are some really cool new assets in this game. The big purple mushrooms are jump spots. The pink birds on the right of the screen [below] turn into pink coins. These new assets make for some really nice "mini games" that you need to complete to collect stars.
My biggest critique of this ROM hack is that the map is ugly and not very interesting or well created. This is what happens when a coder designs the whole game ๐คฃ๐ There are WAY too many floating assets. Especially big ones. The map is WAYYYYYY too small. If you just simply spread out all the star puzzles ... then add more pyramids to the pyramid area ... add some more floating boats by the boat area ... the map would be much better this way.
My other major complaint is that some of the stars are way too easy to retrieve. The overall game is very easy. This is by far the easiest SM64 ROM Hack I have ever played. The star [above] is from crawling into a hole which is very visible. There wasn't even a puzzle. Boooooooring.
Overall I would give this ROM Hack an 8/10. It's not the best map ever; but I can tell this coder did TONS of work to optimize the graphics and such. The game looks EXCELLENT. It's crisp as f%$^ looking. The animation is really smooth. You can tell this was a passion project for other ROM hackers to copy and use. The use case of this ROM hack is solid. There are also some really cool new assets other people could put into a bigger/more difficult map.
