Mr. Geddes asked John for protection following recent threats, leading to a quiet evening with John's family. The peace was shattered when raiders set the ranch on fire and began stealing livestock. After a brutal hand-to-hand fight with the attackers, Mr. Geddes urged John to finally take up his guns.
The next morning, Mr. Geddes called me over for a chat while he was with his wife, so I went to him to see what was bothering the couple. The man said he was a little scared of those people who came to make a mess last time at the property. He was clearly shaken by the recent violence and was hoping John would keep them safe if they returned.
After assuring them he would help keeping them safe, John said he should probably head back to his family to check on Abigail and Jack.
After getting back to the family, John mentioned he was tired and the full family had a meal together before taking some rest. They tried to put the outside world behind them, focusing only on the warmth of their home and each other.
I remember correctly, I walked home with Mr. Geddes at the morning, but right after the meal, it became dark and they were having a peaceful sleep. The ranch grew quiet, and for a moment, it seemed as though the danger had passed.
Suddenly, John heard loud noises and shouting that shattered the silence of the night. He jumped out of his bed and ran outside only to see the whole ranch was on fire.
When I was getting close to the stables, hearing some shouting, I heard some bad guys mentioning it was over for us and the cattle were theirs. I noticed some of them even stole some animals from the ranch and were herding them outside.
I found two guys in pursuit with some of our guys. I stopped them right away by jumping on one of them. We tumbled into the dirt, the firelight dancing around us as we struggled for control in the chaotic darkness of the raid.
It looked like those guys were well-trained and stronger than the usual thugs, and they were clearly prepared for a fight. It was a little hard fighting them at once while the heat from the fire grew more suffocating.
After taking one of them down with a heavy blow to the jaw, I went for the other one. When there was a single one left, I showed him my true strength and finished the fight with some brutal strikes.
When I was done fighting them, there came Mr. Geddes, and he asked me to take my guns out with a determined face. It looked as if he knew who John really was before he became a ranch hand. John didn't hesitate; he just agreed to help him and prepared to go back to his old ways.
