Creo que todos coincidimos en que el ser humano se diferencia de los animales por la capacidad de crear o llevar un registro de su pasado, de razonar y de sentir afinidad por un ente superior. En pocas palabras, el humano tiene la capacidad de crear cultura. Y esa cultura es como un algoritmo o “ADN” de la sociedad el cual puede cambiar o mejorar a través del tiempo.
Pienso que más allá de eso es difícil decir que otra cosa nos hace ser como somos en sentido general. Algunos piensan que el ser humano es por naturaleza malo y depredador de otros seres humanos, otros piensan que el ser humano es por naturaleza bondadoso y es la sociedad quien lo corrompe. Creo que de alguna manera hay o hubo algo que nos hizo ser como somos, y eso es el intelecto y nuestra capacidad de tener autoconsciencia. En un libro que leí recientemente (El libro que tu cerebro no quiere leer) se hablaba de una glándula que nuestro cerebro desarrolló en gran medida, encargada de percibirnos de manera consciente.
Empezamos a entender (o percibir) que somos algo separado del ambiente que nos rodea, y con el intelecto empezamos a razonar de forma más sofisticada que los animales. Personalmente, pienso que el bien y el mal surgieron también como parte de nuestra percepción intelectual, por lo que yo no creo que el ser humano sea malo por naturaleza, o bueno por naturaleza, sino que creo que somos imperfectos por naturaleza.
Pero sin duda que hay algo más, algo que nos hace pensar en nosotros como especie, y pienso que es nuestra capacidad de generar historias, ya sean ficticias o no, acerca de nosotros mismos. Pensamos en nuestra vida por medio de experiencias, recuerdos de imágenes, olores, sonidos, etc. Ya es casi cultura general hoy en día decir que nuestro cerebro genera recuerdos “falsos”. Somos capaces de plasmar historias en películas, escritos, canciones, etc. Y de igual manera somos capaces de crear historias, totalmente ficticias, con el motivo de simplemente mostrarlas, entretener o expresar ideas.
Y el principal motivo por el que creamos historias, reales o no, es que ello nos hace emocionarnos, crear emociones en nosotros mismos y en los demás. Recordamos cosas que nos hicieron reír precisamente por eso, porque nos hicieron reír. Vemos películas porque buscamos esa emoción que nos transmite. Y de igual manera que cómo una película puede inspirarnos de manera muy fuerte, nuestros antepasados (sin películas) pudieron haberse sentido muy inspirados por las leyendas que contaban los más sabios, al punto de crear una identidad en torno a ellas.
Es por algo que la música es un fuerte inspirador o catalizador de emociones. Nos permite incluso hacer cosas o tareas difíciles con más facilidad. Siempre me he preguntado si los animales también disfrutan de la música. He notado que los gatos y perros en general ignoran la música, pero hay algunas que sí parecen relajarles más o incluso estimularles a “cantar” (en el caso de los perros). Hay experimentos en donde las plantas parecen crecer más con cierta música de fondo. Esto en hace pensar que el ser humano tiene “algo” que le hace conectar emocionalmente de manera más sofisticada o profunda con la música. Y de igual manera con el arte en general.
Todo esto me hace pensar en una palabra: cultura. Lo que nos hace humanos es la capacidad de crear historias, y que esas historias nos generen emociones. Un recuerdo podría ser una historia creada por nuestra mente acerca de algo que sucedió. En el fondo, son ideas inmateriales que nos generan emoción y eso nos inspira a crear o trabajar en nuestros fines o proyectos de vida.

I think we all agree that human beings differ from animals in their ability to create or keep a record of their past, to reason and to feel affinity for a superior entity. I think beyond that it is difficult to say what else makes us the way we are in a general sense. Some think that human beings are by nature evil and predators of other human beings, others think that human beings are by nature kind and it is society that corrupts them. I believe that somehow there is or was something that made us the way we are, and that is the intellect and our capacity for self-awareness. In a book I read recently (The book your brain doesn't want to read) they talked about a gland that our brain developed to a great extent, in charge of perceiving us in a conscious way.
We begin to understand (or perceive) that we are something separate from the environment around us, and with intellect we begin to reason in a more sophisticated way than animals. Personally, I think that good and evil arose also as part of our intellectual perception, so I do not believe that human beings are evil by nature, or good by nature, but I believe that we are imperfect by nature.
But there is certainly something else, something that makes us think about ourselves as a species, and I think it is our ability to generate stories, whether fictional or not, about ourselves. We think about our lives through experiences, memories of images, smells, sounds, etc. It is almost general culture nowadays to say that our brain generates "false" memories. We are capable of capturing stories in movies, writings, songs, etc. And in the same way we are capable of creating stories, totally fictitious, with the motive of simply showing them, entertaining or expressing ideas.
And the main reason why we create stories, real or not, is that it makes us emotional, creates emotions in ourselves and in others. We remember things that made us laugh precisely for that reason, because they made us laugh. We watch movies because we look for that emotion that it transmits to us. And just as a movie can inspire us in a very strong way, our ancestors (without movies) could have been very inspired by the legends told by the wisest, to the point of creating an identity around them.
That is why music is such a strong inspirer or catalyst of emotions. It even allows us to do difficult things or tasks more easily. I have always wondered if animals enjoy music too. I have noticed that cats and dogs generally ignore music, but there are some that do seem to relax them more or even stimulate them to "sing" (in the case of dogs). There are experiments where plants seem to grow more with certain music in the background. This makes us think that human beings have "something" that makes them connect emotionally in a more sophisticated or profound way with music. And likewise with art in general.
All this makes me think of one word: culture. What makes us human is the ability to create stories, and for those stories to generate emotions. A memory could be a story created by our mind about something that happened. In the end, they are immaterial ideas that generate emotion in us and that inspires us to create or work on our purposes or projects in life.
