Esto no es posible debido a la libertad del ser humano, que anula cualquier intento de predecir su comportamiento de forma exacta. Sin embargo, es posible el estudio del pasado de la humanidad, tanto a nivel de hechos como a nivel de ideas y creaciones. Las conclusiones que podemos establecer serán de carácter subjetivo y podrán ser cuestionadas más adelante, pues no hay tal cosa como respuestas definitivas.
This isn’t possible due to the freedom of the human being, which makes our behavior impossible to predict. However, it’s possible to study the past, the ideas that we have been developing and the different cultural manifestations. The conclusions that we can stablish will be subjective and they could be disputed in the future, because there is no such thing as a definitive answer.
Pero, como plantee anteriormente, todos tenemos el deber y la necesidad de aprender sobre estos temas, en mayor o menor medida. El estudio de estas no solo es beneficioso en la medida en que permiten expandir nuestro conocimiento sobre la naturaleza humana y sobre otras perspectivas, sino que permiten el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico necesario para el desenvolvimiento de la ciudadanía en una sociedad democrática.
Como ciudadanos de sistemas democráticos, debemos ser capaces de escoger gobernantes que representen nuestros intereses en las distintas instituciones estatales. Si no poseemos el criterio para analizar las distintas propuestas políticas, entonces podremos ser víctimas de los populistas que, al ser elegidos, realizan una acción de gobierno contraria a nuestros intereses. El peligro no solo es que escojamos a un líder corrupto, sino que escojamos a alguien que atente contra el funcionamiento del Estado y el desenvolvimiento de las personas en él.
But, as I stated previously, we all have the need and the duty of learning about this subjects, to a greater or lesser extent. Studying them isn’t only beneficial because it allows us to expand our understanding on human nature and on different perspectives, but because it allow the development of the critical thinking needed for the development of the citizenry in a democratic society.
As citizens of democratic systems, we have the need to be able to choose rulers that represent our interests in the different State institutions. If we don’t have the judgment to analyze the different political proposals, then we could be victims of populists that, when elected, will work in opposition to our true interests. This isn’t dangerous just because we can choose corrupt politicians, but because we could choose someone who goes against the proper functioning of the State and against the citizens.
El conocimiento de la historia, tanto a un nivel nacional como universal, nos permite entender cómo llegamos al sitio en donde estamos. Todo lo que está ocurriendo hoy en día forman parte de otros eventos históricos que le anteceden. El conocimiento de estos procesos nos permite comprender nuestro lugar en el mundo. De esta forma seremos conscientes del legado histórico que tenemos entre manos, que debemos respetar, transformar y que debemos transmitir a las generaciones futuras.
El conocimiento de la filosofía nos permite entender la evolución del pensamiento humano. Saber filosofía es comprender el origen y el desarrollo del pensamiento racional. Sin este, la sociedad contemporánea no sería posible, pues los avances científicos y el progreso cultural están ligados a ideas y planteamientos filosóficos.
Es importante tener unas nociones fundamentales de política. Esto puede verse desde dos ángulos. El histórico, en donde comprendemos el desarrollo de procesos histórico políticos de las sociedades a las que pertenecemos, y el ángulo de filosofía política, en donde somos capaces de entender la ideología que se encuentra en la base de las instituciones políticas de nuestros países y de los planteamientos de los distintos partidos políticos.
Por último, el estudio y el consumo de literatura nos permite la profundización en el entendimiento de la naturaleza humana. No es lo mismo conocer a fondo distintos procesos políticos que conocer las historias o los testimonios de personas que vivieron a través de distintos procesos. La literatura permite empatizar con el otro y entenderlo. Mediante el conocimiento de las historias particulares podemos ir desarrollando una idea sobre aquella universalidad que representa la condición humana.
The knowledge of history, both on a national and an universal level, allows us to understand how we get to the place we are currently. All of the things that are happening today are part of other historical processes that were happening before. The knowledge of these processes allows us to understand our place in the world. This way we will be conscious of the historical legacy that we carry, that we must respect, transform and transmit to the future generations.
The knowledge of philosophy allows us to understand the evolution of human thought. To know philosophy is to understand the origin and the development of rational thought. Without it, contemporary society as we understand it would be impossible, due to the fact that scientific thought and cultural progress are deeply rooted in philosophical ideas.
It is important to possess fundamental notions of politics. This can be understood from two different perspectives. The historical one, in which we understand the development of political and historical processes of the societies that we belong to; and the philosophical one, in which we are capable of understanding the ideological basis of our political institutions and our political parties.
At last, the study and consumption of literature allows us to understand the depthness of human nature. Its different have the knowledge of political and historical processes than to know the stories and testimonies of people that lived through those said processes. Literature allows us to be empathetic with other people and to understand them. Through the knowledge of particular stories, we can develop an idea of the universality that represents the human condition.
Puede ser un video en Youtube o un artículo de Wikipedia, o quizás un podcast. Hoy en día tenemos la oportunidad de acceder a mucha información que en el pasado estaba reservada para quienes disponían de los medios económicos para comprar libros o para acceder a los estudios universitarios.
