Heute geht es um eine echte Legende unter den Messern - und diesmal haben wir sogar das Original im Bild.
Today we are looking at a true legend - and even a genuine one this time.
USN Utility Knife Mark 2 / USMC Fighting Knife Mark 2, aka Ka-Bar
Nach Eintritt der USA in den 2. Weltkrieg ergab sich eine allgemeine Unzufriedenheit mit den bei US Armee und Navy gängigen Feldmesser Modellen, die hauptsächlich aus dem 1. Weltkrieg stammten. Deshalb wurde ein neues, verbessertes Messer in Auftrag gegeben, das stabiler, vielseitiger und auch billiger in der Herstellung sein sollte. So wurde das Modell 1217C2 entwickelt, das ende 1942 offiziell als USN Utility Knife Mk2 eingeführt wurde.
Ab mitte 1943 wurde das Messermodell, inzwischen unter dem Namen Ka-Bar (nach einer der Hersteller Firmen) bekannt, in allen Teilen der US Streitkräfte ausgegeben, quasi an jeden der eins haben wollte und der kein Bayonett (zum M1 Garand Gewehr) besaß.
So kam es, das Millionen Ka-Bars gefertigt wurden - und bis heute immer noch werden. Es gibt zwar mittlerweile modernere Kampf- und Feldmesser die offiziell an US Streitkräfte ausgegeben werden, aber viele US Soldaten bevorzugen immer noch das Ka-Bar.
After the USA entered World War II, there was general dissatisfaction with the field knife models common in the US Army and Navy, which mainly originated from World War I. Therefore a new, improved knife was commissioned, which should be more stable, more versatile and also cheaper to manufacture. So the model 1217C2 was developed, which was officially introduced at the end of 1942 as the USN Utility Knife Mk2.
From mid-1943 the knife model, then commonly known under the name Ka-Bar (after one of the manufacturer's companies), was issued in all parts of the US armed forces, practically to everyone who wanted one and who did not own a bayonet (for the M1 Garand rifle).
So it came about that millions of Ka-Bars were made - and still are today. There are now more modern combat and field knives that are officially issued in the US forces, but many US soldiers still prefer the Ka-Bar.
Typisch am Ka-Bar die etwas versetzte Klinge in "Bowie" Form, sowie der Griff aus aufeinander gestapelten und gepreßten Lederscheiben mit dem runden Stahlknauf.
Typical of the Ka-Bar is the slightly offset blade in "Bowie" shape, as well as the handle made of stacked and pressed leather discs with the round steel pummel.
Die Klinge ist aus 1095 Karbon Stahl mit einer Härte von 56-58 HRC, der sich sehr gut schärfen läßt. Moderne Modelle (wie hier im Bild) sind schwarz beschichtet. Auf der linken Seite befindet sich die Stempelung des Herstellers: KA-BAR, OLEAN, N.Y., auf der rechten Seite USMC.
The blade is made of 1095 carbon steel with a hardness of 56-58 HRC, which can be sharpened very well. Modern models (like here in the picture) are coated black. On the left is the manufacturer's stamp: KA-BAR, OLEAN, N.Y., on the right USMC.
Auch die Scheide ist entsprechend gestempelt, zusätzlich noch mit dem Wappen des US Marine Corps.
Diese Scheide ist schon speziell: zwar nicht besonders hochwertig gemacht und aus Kostengründen in Mexiko gefertigt, ist sie doch selbst schon fast eine tödliche Waffe. Denn besonders im neuen Zustand stinkt sie dermaßen abartig, das die Fliegen von der Wand fallen. Keine Ahnung womit das Leder gegerbt wurde, ich wills auch lieber gar nicht wissen... Mittlerweile (nach 5 oder 6 Jahren) geht es einigermaßen.
The sheath is also stamped accordingly, additionally with the coat of arms of the US Marine Corps.
This sheath is special: although not made of high quality and manufactured in Mexico for cost reasons, it is almost a deadly weapon itself. Because especially in the new condition it smells so horrendous that it makes the flies drop from the wall. I have no idea what the leather was tanned with, and I rather will not know ... Now (after 5 or 6 years) it's not too bad anymore.
Da ein original Ka-Bar um die $100 kostet, gibt es natürlich auch davon reichlich Fakes aus China. Deshalb ist auf dem Karton ein spezielles Hologram Siegel.
Since an original Ka-Bar costs around $ 100, there are of course plenty of fakes from China. That is why there is a special hologram seal on the box.
Objektiv betrachtet, ist dieses Messer natürlich überteuert, für das was man bekommt.
Objectivly seen, this knife is clearly overpriced for what you get.
Andererseits - was darf eine Legende kosten?
On the other hand - what's a appropriate price for a legend?
