It's 12:00 am here, before retiring to bed, I couldn't help but share something I find interesting and a tad amusing.
Life is so funny and so are humans, we are wired in a very complex way; our thought processes and emotions are widely different, making us complicated beings.
Humans are insatiable, and I stand by this statement, any day, any time. You work so hard to get what you have always desired, but the moment you get it, the excitement slowly fades and it gradually becomes one of your many possessions. Suddenly, it doesn't seem so special like you've always thought it was, and suddenly you can comfortably live without it, contrary to what you had thought before the purchase.
Without warning, you move on to the next “big thing” on your list. You make plans to buy whatever it is you want this time and when you finally do, the cycle continues over and again. Rinse and repeat, this sucks right? I know.
If the excitement to own or do something for oneself disappears after acquisition what then is the need to put ourselves under unnecessary pressure? Why worry your pretty head over something that becomes the new normal to you in no time?
As much as there are things we get for ourselves or do that are priceless and time has nothing on them, they’re also others we sometimes regret buying as they end up becoming properties lying around.
While pondering on this aspect of human nature, I read a couple of articles that explain this behavioral pattern. In one of the many articles I read, I discovered that the brain rewards pursuit more than possessions or accomplishments, and frankly speaking, I couldn’t agree more. It explains why we experience a dopamine rush when we are pursuing something as against having it. Once you get it and feel fulfilled, your brain gives you another side quest, and in no time, you’re over the euphoria of whatever you’ve acquired to the next thing you need to achieve.
Realizing this wasn’t a “me” problem was relieving to say the very least😃
If you ever start to feel a certain way after purchasing that item you saved up for or anticipated, bear in mind that nothing is wrong with you, nor the item you purchased, your brain is just on another mission, and it’s perfectly normal😃
Have you experienced such dopamine rush after purchasing an item and regretting it after a period of time? How did you handle it? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments.
