A tough decision I have come to realize is the fact that emotions especially human emotions are temporary while decisions made from them can be permanent. It could be when you are happy, sad, excited or even frustrated, these feelings could leave after a while, although it could take a long time before it leaves. But the decisions made during that moment can stick to your shirt like a stain that never wants to leave after applying bleach.
An emotion that has made me to realize this ideology of not making decisions during the heat of the moment is fear. Fear can be a strong motivation and at the same time it could be the force that breaks the chain of a moving vehicle. Sometimes the panics can come during a short time control while playing online on lichess. I discovered by playing fast during bullet is not the only way to win the game especially when you are playing a player of my strength, 2400+ or even stronger. But clocking when the other player panics by playing a poor move or worse a blunder. I am sure you should be asking yourself at this point, how do you decode this since your opponent is not within the same physical space with you? Well, that is simple, the pace of play reduces. For instance if you both were bulleting your moves at the beginning of the game, but you notice that there is a point where the other player slows down, just know there is something wrong there. Then the real question comes down to you, can you find it fast enough?
Remember, you do not want to return the favour by slowing down as well because it would be balancing the edge you once had.
It is marvelous the things you can pick as you play the game of chess more often than usual. Now I have realized fear could cause a loss in time and soon enough, you are in a bad position. Just like every other bad position, it becomes hard to find the best move. People, do not forget the feeling you get at a certain point in time will not last forever. Especially when things are bad. Trust me when I say at that point it feels like the world is coming to an end or a pause. It is only human to amplify one's predicament at a given time especially when you are feeling down but what makes it worse is when you make decisions under this sad feelings or emotion. I can say the feeling will pass but I cannot speak to the decision that was made at that point.
This is where patience becomes a vital tool in hand. Take a moment to consider the situation or at least to take a breath of calmness. It is difficult when one is going through such moment and it can only get worse when you rush to making decisions. In my opinion, this is why I consider classical chess to be the best form of chess. You get to see your emotions taking charge while playing. If you get an edge, there is the presence of strength and confidence written all over the player's face and when it is the point of losing, things become difficult and you could see the unpleasantness on the player's face. Chess speaks a lot to the human emotions and one thing I have gotten from it is do not make decisions in the heat of the moment.
