WORMS
Worms are everywhere, all you need is a shovel and a willing body to to go dig them up. But what do they do to if anything ?
For the environment they eat organic waste. So things like plant matter and decaying flesh are great food for worms. What goes in must come out and whilst what worms eat is rubbish for us it is nutritious for worms . Alternatively what worms excrete is waste for them but nutritious for plants helping to fertilise and feed them. Worms even help air rate the soil to help plants grow, so they actually do a lot for not only the environment but for humans and other animals as well.
Worms can eat their own capacity worth of waste a day. That’s a lot of nutrients getting created for our plants to grow. And a lot less waste laying around. If you se little mounds on the ground sometimes they can be worm castings( worm poo) worm poo is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus which allows plants thrive. Worms can improve the condition of the soil by up to 90% that is massive.
Not only do they improve oxidation of the soil with their tunnels but they also improve so it structure and drainage.
Worms even help microorganisms get around. But why is that important? These micro organisms can change toxic soil to non toxic soil, repairing contaminated land.
So worms actually do a lot for us and the environment. To be honest I did not know about most of this before joining this challenge so this is even news to me. Worms play a massive role in helping clean and nurture the land. Another fact I found out is that whilst they help increase farming yield, farmers Chose to use other means of fertilisation which can be harmful to worms.
This means work numbers are dwindling even though they play such an important role in our environment.
I hope someone finds this information important and maybe even changes your view on these little heroes.
Have a great day.
