Desde que llegué a este país, he tratado de adaptarme a su cultura, costumbres, formas de vida y tradiciones. Aunque somos un país hermano, existen algunas diferencias entre nosotros que caracterizan cada región.
En cuanto a la gastronomía, existen marcadas diferencias, sin embargo la arepa nunca falta en los platos colombianos. De todas maneras, la duda de si las arepas son venezolanas o colombianas siempre aparece en el tapete en alguna reunión o conversación, pero para no caer en ningún tipo de discusión, yo he respondido, todo este tiempo, que la arepa nos pertenece a todos, es el plato que nos une, así que no importa su origen y la compartimos. Esta respuesta es mi aliada para mantener la cordialidad con mis hermanos colombianos.
Dentro mi proceso de adaptación en esta gran ciudad, he asumido su estilo de vida y considero que ha sido rápido y coherente. He asumido, entre otras cosas, que la lluvia no es pretexto para no salir a la calle, solo hay que tener a mano un buen abrigo y un paraguas y listo. ¡A trabajar o a disfrutar de la ciudad, para luego es tarde!
En cuanto a la vestimenta, he aprendido a dejar guardadas las franelas sin mangas y a procurarme una vestimenta con dos o tres capas mínimas para tolerar los días fríos que son casi todos. Ya en este punto, yo siempre salgo con dos capas y a mano cuellos, ponchos o bufandas, ¡no pueden faltar en mi cartera!
Así, me he acoplado a mi nueva vida cerquita de la montaña, bajo cielos nublados, un frío delicioso y hasta granizo.
De la misma manera, he estado siempre dispuesta a compartir de sus tradiciones. La mayoría las compartimos, celebramos algunas festividades, aunque con fechas diferentes.
Este año, por primera vez, he vivido la experiencia de la celebración del día de Las Velitas en Colombia. Esta tradición se celebra cada siete de diciembre por la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Virgen María que es el día siguiente, el ocho de diciembre. Para los colombianos, esta es una fecha muy especial porque con el encendido de las velitas, también, dan inicio a la Navidad.
Since I arrived in this country, I have tried to adapt to its culture, customs, ways of life and traditions. Although we are a brother country, there are some differences between us that characterize each region.
In terms of gastronomy, there are marked differences, however the arepa is never missing in Colombian dishes. Anyway, the doubt of whether arepas are Venezuelan or Colombian always appears on the table in some meeting or conversation, but in order not to fall into any kind of discussion, I have answered, all this time, that the arepa belongs to all of us, it is the dish that unites us, so no matter its origin and we share it. This answer is my ally to maintain cordiality with my Colombian brothers.
Within my process of adaptation in this great city, I have assumed its lifestyle and I consider that it has been fast and coherent. I have assumed, among other things, that rain is not an excuse for not going out, you just have to have a good coat and an umbrella at hand and that's it. To work or to enjoy the city, for then it's late!
As for clothing, I have learned to put away the sleeveless flannels and to procure a dress with two or three layers minimum to tolerate the cold days that are almost all. At this point, I always go out with two layers and collars, ponchos or scarves are a must in my purse!
Thus, I have adapted to my new life near the mountains, under cloudy skies, a delicious cold and even hail.
In the same way, I have always been willing to share their traditions. Most of us share them, we celebrate some holidays, although with different dates.
This year, for the first time, I have lived the experience of celebrating Candlemas Day in Colombia. This tradition is celebrated every December 7th on the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, which is the following day, December 8th. For Colombians, this is a very special date because the lighting of the candles also marks the beginning of Christmas.

En la noche de Las Velitas "se conmemora el momento en que el Arcángel Gabriel anunció a María que fue la elegida, desde antes de su nacimiento, para ser la madre de Jesús"Ver. Es una celebración muy hermosa y emotiva porque cuando empieza a caer la noche, todos salen a las puertas de sus casas, jardines, negocios, plazas y parques para encender las velitas y llenar el ambiente de luz, colores y devoción.
La tradición consiste en encender varias velitas para hacer peticiones para el nuevo año, para agradecer lo vivido y para iluminar a los seres queridos que ya han partido. Es un momento de regocijo familiar.
En mi familia, nos reunimos en las puertas de nuestro negocio para agradecer, primero que todo, por la salud y por las bendiciones recibidas, por las oportunidades y por la bondad, por la generosidad y por la solidaridad de este país que nos ha acogido.
Cada velita encendida era luz para un deseo por el amor, por la familia, por la unión, por la prosperidad, por los planes y proyectos que tenemos como familia.
Es una tradición nueva para nosotros, pero la vivimos con el corazón lleno de gratitud. Dios nos permita celebrar esta hermosa festividad a la Virgen por muchos años más.
The night of Las Velitas "commemorates the moment when the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was the chosen one, before her birth, to be the mother of Jesus"See. It is a very beautiful and emotional celebration because when night begins to fall, everyone goes out to the doors of their homes, gardens, businesses, squares and parks to light the candles and fill the atmosphere with light, colors and devotion.
The tradition consists of lighting several candles to make petitions for the new year, to give thanks for what has been lived and to illuminate the loved ones who have already departed. It is a moment of family rejoicing.
In my family, we gather at the doors of our business to give thanks, first of all, for the health and blessings received, for the opportunities and goodness, for the generosity and solidarity of this country that has welcomed us.
Each lit candle was light for a wish for love, for the family, for union, for prosperity, for the plans and projects we have as a family.
It is a new tradition for us, but we live it with a heart full of gratitude. May God allow us to celebrate this beautiful feast to the Virgin for many more years to come.

Fue muy conmovedor ver a los vecinos encender sus velitas y faroles en cada puerta, mientras hacían sus peticiones y agradecimientos, compartiendo todos como una gran familia unida por la tradición y la devoción a la Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción.
En mi oración, durante el encendido de mis velitas, pedí por la paz, la bondad y la humildad en nuestros corazones. También pedí para que reine el amor, la unión y la prosperidad en todos los hogares de este país y del mundo, especialmente, en los hogares de mi amada Venezuela.
It was very touching to see the neighbors light their candles and lanterns at each door, while they made their petitions and thanksgiving, all sharing as a big family united by tradition and devotion to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception.
In my prayer, during the lighting of my candles, I prayed for peace, kindness and humility in our hearts. I also prayed for love, union and prosperity to reign in all the homes of this country and the world, especially in the homes of my beloved Venezuela.
