Greetings to everyone in the Lifestyle community! Today I’m joining you here to share a new chapter in my life. This time, I want to update you on the progress I’ve made with the mural I was commissioned to create for the book club at the school where I work. As I mentioned in a previous post (dedicated to this topic) here on Hive, I had never worked on a similar commission before—that is, a mural—which is why I tried to understand what they wanted to ensure I could deliver the work. I believe honesty is key here because people deserve quality work, and artists must be both skilled and honest while acknowledging their limitations. It’s about ensuring credibility.
Now that I think about it… at one point when I was studying and doing my university internship, I remember that the school where I was interning used to ask us to do various things related to “decorating” or setting up stage designs for any event being held. And one day, they asked us to make a fairly large mandala, which we managed to complete together with the students. It was a nice activity, although it particularly bothers me a bit that we visual arts teachers are considered professionals in set design, crafts, or something similar. And not because there’s anything wrong with doing any of those things, but because we are educators in a field that deserves just as much respect as any other.
Saludos a todos en la comunidad de Lifestyle, el día de hoy me uno por acá para compartir con ustedes un nuevo día en mi vida. En esta ocasión les quiero compartir cómo ha sido el avance con respecto al mural que se me encargó trabajar para el Club de Lectura del colegio, en el cual trabajo. Como dije en una publicación anterior (dedicada a ello) aquí en Hive, nunca antes había trabajado en algún tipo de encargo similar, es decir, un mura... razón por la cual intenté conocer lo que ellas deseaban para poder tener la seguridad de que iba a poder cumplir con el trabajo. Creo que es importante la honestidad aquí pues las personas merecen un buen trabajo y los artistas deben ser tanto cómo hábiles, honestos y reconocer sus alcances. Es garantizar credibilidad.
Ahora que recuerdo… en un punto dado cuando estaba estudiando y haciendo mi pasantía de la universidad, recuerdo que el colegió donde yo hacía mis prácticas solía pedirnos varias cosas que tenían que ver con “adornar” o montar escenografías para cualquier evento que se celebrara. Y en eso un día nos pidieron hacer un mándala bastante grande que logramos culminar junto a los chicos. Fue una actividad bonita, aunque particularmente me molesta un poco el hecho de que a los docentes de artes plásticas se nos considere profesionales de escenografía, manualidades o algo similar. Y no porque haya malo en hacer algo de lo mencionado sino que somos educadores en un área que merece igual respeto que cualquiera otra.
Aside from that, and so as not to stray too far from what I was saying, I’ve been making good progress on the mural these days. We’ve already got the letters ready and the sides of the wall where the shelves are placed, holding a variety of books and various items. I took the liberty of drawing a series of little mice around the books, since, considering this space is for the kids, I think it’s something they’ll like, and it’s also a personal touch. I think they’re a cute and charming little detail to look at—like the mice’s secret reading nook. I’ll also add some literary icons. There’s still work to be done, but I’m happy with what we have so far… though I am a little worried about the timeline, since I don’t have much time left and it needs to be ready soon. Fuera de ello y para no irme muy lejos de lo que estaba contando, estos días he estado avanzando bastante con el mural. Ya tenemos las letras listas y los laterales de la pared donde van ubicados los estantes que contienen una variedad de libros y elementos varios. Me tomé la libertad de hacer una serie de ratoncitos alrededor de los libros, pues pensando en que este espacio es para los niños, creo que es algo que les gustará y también es un toque personal. Me parecen una curiosidad bonita y tierna de ver. Como el rincón de lectura secreto de los ratones. También añadiré algunos iconos de la literatura. Sin hay trabajo por hacer, pero estoy feliz con lo que tenemos… eso sí, me preocupa un poco el tiempo pues no cuento con demasiado y ya debe estar listo.
